Paramedical Tattooing | Maidstone, Kent
Specialist paramedical tattoo camouflage for suitable areas of stable pigment loss, including vitiligo and hypopigmented scars.
Carefully colour-matched pigment is implanted using a professional tattoo machine and sterile tattoo needle to reduce the visible contrast between lighter areas and the surrounding skin.
The Treatment
Pigment Loss Camouflage is a specialist paramedical tattooing technique used to improve the appearance of suitable areas where skin colour has been lost or significantly reduced.
Pigments are carefully selected and blended according to the client's individual skin tone before being implanted into the treatment area using a professional tattoo machine and sterile tattoo needle.
The aim is not to completely hide the area or create a permanent perfect colour match. Instead, the treatment aims to reduce the visible contrast between the lighter area and surrounding skin so that it becomes less noticeable.
This is cosmetic camouflage. It does not restart melanin production, treat the underlying cause of pigment loss or cure any associated condition.
Vitiligo
Yes. Suitable areas of stable vitiligo can be treated with specialist paramedical tattoo camouflage.
At CLININK, vitiligo must have been stable for at least 12 months before camouflage treatment is considered. This means there should have been no meaningful enlargement of the area being considered for treatment and no evidence that the condition is actively progressing.
Carefully colour-matched pigment can then be implanted into suitable depigmented areas using a professional tattoo machine and sterile tattoo needle to reduce the visible contrast between the lighter patch and the surrounding skin.
This is cosmetic camouflage rather than a medical treatment for vitiligo. It does not restart melanin production, stop vitiligo progressing or cure the underlying condition.
Vitiligo can sometimes respond to skin trauma through a process known as the Koebner phenomenon, where new areas of depigmentation may develop following injury or trauma to the skin. For this reason, stability, skin history and individual suitability are particularly important before tattooing is considered.
Clients should have a confirmed diagnosis of vitiligo. Where there is uncertainty around diagnosis, stability or suitability, medical or dermatology input may be recommended before treatment.
Suitability
Every case is different. Suitability depends on factors including the stability of the condition, colour, texture, location and the condition of the surrounding skin. An assessment is required before treatment.
Active or recently changing vitiligo will not be treated. If the cause of pigment loss is unknown, or there is uncertainty around diagnosis or stability, further medical assessment may be required before camouflage is considered.
Colour Matching
Skin tone is not one flat colour, which is why pigment camouflage requires careful colour selection rather than simply choosing a standard "skin-coloured" pigment.
Pigments are selected and blended according to the individual client and the surrounding skin. Think of it similarly to choosing foundation: the aim is to achieve a close and natural-looking blend, but no pigment can permanently reproduce every variation in natural skin tone.
Our skin also changes throughout the year and as we age. Sun exposure, lifestyle and the natural breakdown of pigment can gradually alter the appearance of the colour over time. This fading is expected and allows future touch-ups to be adjusted to the client's skin tone as it changes.
Lifestyle is also considered when planning camouflage. Surrounding skin can tan while areas affected by vitiligo do not produce melanin in the same way. This means significant tanning can temporarily increase the contrast between the tattooed area and surrounding skin.
Regular sun exposure, tanning habits and the location of the pigment loss should therefore be discussed during your assessment.
Before Full Treatment
A colour and patch test is highly recommended before treating a larger area.
A small amount of custom-blended pigment is implanted into an appropriate part of the treatment area and allowed to heal fully.
This allows us to assess several important things before progressing: how your skin responds to treatment, how well the pigment is retained, how the colour settles once healed and whether the pigment blend needs adjusting.
Freshly implanted pigment can initially appear darker, warmer or more intense than the final healed result, which is why we assess the healed colour rather than trying to achieve the final result immediately.
For clients with vitiligo, starting conservatively also allows us to observe how the skin responds to needling before progressing to a larger treatment area.
The Process
The area, skin tone, stability and suitability for camouflage are assessed. A confirmed diagnosis is required for vitiligo.
A small amount of custom-blended pigment is implanted and allowed to heal fully so we can assess the skin response and refine the colour before treating a larger area.
Carefully colour-matched pigment is implanted into the suitable depigmented area using a professional tattoo machine and sterile tattoo needle.
The area is allowed to heal fully before the colour is assessed. Further sessions may be recommended to build and refine the result gradually.
Our Approach
Successful skin camouflage is usually built in layers.
Rather than trying to create full colour correction in one appointment, pigment can be introduced gradually and assessed after healing. This allows the colour, undertone and pigment retention to be refined according to how your individual skin responds.
Immediately after treatment, pigment may appear darker or warmer and the skin may look red. The final colour cannot be accurately judged at this stage.
Once the area has healed and settled, we can assess the result and determine whether further pigment needs to be added or adjusted.
The aim is a soft, natural-looking reduction in contrast rather than heavy coverage.
Client Results
Pigment Loss Camouflage is designed to reduce visible contrast rather than erase an area completely. Results vary depending on the condition, skin tone, healing response and treatment area.
